Conger Eel

Conger Eel Fishing Guide – Baits, Rigs & Techniques

What is a Conger Eel?

The Conger Eel is one of over 100 eel species and is one of the most powerful fish found in UK waters. Conger eels can grow to 100lb plus, with some specimens believed to grow even larger. They are usually dark grey to blue-green in colour, although their colouring can vary depending on depth and habitat.

Conger eels are pure muscle, equipped with sharp teeth and a powerful crushing jaw, making them a hard-fighting fish once hooked. Most large congers are caught from boats, particularly over wrecks, but smaller conger eels are regularly caught from the shore, especially at night.

Where Will I Catch a Conger Eel?

Conger eels are found all around the UK, but are most common on the west coast. They can also be caught on the east coast and are widespread throughout European waters.

Typical conger eel habitats include:

  • Wrecks and reefs

  • Deep water marks

  • Rocky ground and kelp beds

  • Harbour walls, piers and breakwaters

Congers spend most of their time hiding in holes and structure, venturing out mainly at night to feed.

What Bait Will Catch a Conger Eel?

Conger eels are aggressive feeders and respond best to large, oily, strong-smelling baits. Proven baits include:

  • Mackerel (whole, fillets or heads)

  • Squid (whole or large strips)

  • Octopus

  • Bluey

  • Pouting

  • Herring

  • Sandeels / Launce

  • Dogfish sections

  • Ragworm (effective for smaller congers)

Fresh bait will always out-fish frozen when possible, and bigger baits generally attract bigger fish.

What Rigs Should I Use for Conger Eel?

Boat Fishing Rigs

When fishing from a boat, tackle strength is critical:

  • Single hook rig

  • 100lb mono snoods or stronger

  • Heavy-duty hooks 6/0 – 10/0

  • Leads heavy enough to hold bottom in tide

Congers will often hit hard and head straight back into structure, so quality gear is essential.

Shore Fishing Rigs

From the shore, congers are often a by-catch, but when targeting them specifically:

  • Pulley rig

  • 6/0+ strong pattern hooks

  • Heavy mono or wire traces

  • Large baits

  • Fish close to structure and deep water

Night fishing significantly increases success from the shore.

How Do I Land a Conger Eel?

  • Smaller conger eels can be safely landed with a strong landing net

  • Larger congers may need to be carefully gaffed

Extreme care should be taken due to their sharp teeth and powerful jaws. While conger eels are edible, they are not regarded as the best-tasting fish, and many anglers choose to release them.

Best Baits for Conger Eels

Conger eels are aggressive, scent-driven predators that favour large, oily, and strong-smelling baits. Bigger baits not only attract congers more effectively but also help deter smaller nuisance species.
