What is a Peeler Crab?
A Peeler Crab is the common shore crab that sheds its shell to grow bigger. During this pre-moult stage, which lasts about a week, it produces a scent trail that fish find irresistible. After moulting, it becomes a softy—less scent, but still effective as bait.
Where to Find a Peeler Crab
Peeler crabs hide and bury themselves during moulting to avoid predators. Good spots include:
-
Under rocks (always return rocks to their original position)
-
Weed or kelp beds
Be aware: collecting from weed beds can be hard work and may yield few crabs.
What Fish Will a Peeler Crab Catch?
Peeler crabs are excellent bait for:
-
Cod
-
Smoothhound
-
Bass
-
Rays
…and many other species.
How to Bait a Peeler Crab
-
Remove as much of the outer shell and under-armor as possible.
-
Keep the legs and carefully peel them—painful, but effective for smaller species.
-
You’ll be left with a roundish piece of crab meat. If the crab is large, it can be cut in half or used whole.
-
Mount on the hook: through the back and out through a leg socket, then secure with bait elastic for best results.
